How to present financials for a Schengen application
Bank statements tell a story. Here is how to make that story easy to read and easy to believe.
Consulates aren't hunting for a specific number. They're checking two things: is there enough money for this trip, and does it look like it's genuinely yours. Money that's been sitting in your account for months, moving the way normal income does, reads very differently to money that appeared three days before you applied.
There's no single EU-wide minimum — each country sets its own guidance, and some leave it to the officer's discretion entirely. As a rough sense of scale, published daily minimums typically fall between €45 and €120, with France and Germany toward the higher end and Italy and Spain lower. Bring more than a bank statement. A strong file usually includes salary slips from the last three months, an employer letter confirming your role and approved leave, and tax documents if you're self-employed. If someone else is sponsoring the trip, their bank statements and proof of your relationship to them need to sit alongside the sponsorship letter — the letter alone isn't proof of anything.
Print statements for the last three to six months, stamped by your bank, with the account holder's name visible on every page. If a large deposit appears, add a one-line explanation and its supporting document — a bonus payslip, a sale agreement, a loan letter. Unexplained deposits are one of the fastest ways to trigger a closer look.
Match the numbers to your itinerary. If you booked four nights in Lisbon, the funds should read as someone who can comfortably afford four nights in Lisbon, plus a margin — not someone scraping together the minimum.
Consistency is what gets read as credibility. A payslip, an employer letter, and a bank deposit that all agree with each other will do more for your application than a higher balance with numbers that don't quite match.
